Caledonian Classic Car Tour May 2011

We had a great classic car tour in May this year; we had fabulous weather the sun shone every day and just a drop of rain on the last day. On the tour we had eight cars and a film crew. We had a great reception wherever we went, the cars made a colourful backdrop to the amazing scenery we passed through.  Whenever we stopped people came over and took photographs and wanted to chat to us about the cars, the atmosphere was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I followed the tour in my not so classic Audi Allroad with my back up mechanic Billy Little. The hospitality we received at the Hotels was first class and we enjoyed some great local food.

        Three Classics

Day One – After coffee and an introduction to the cars we set off in the sunshine along the Hillfoots towards Stirling, we had lunch at the Roman Camp in Callander, then through the national park to Oban we spent the night at the Pier House Hotel Port Appin, we parked the cars on the beach, really amazing views!

Day Two – After breakfast we continued up the coast to Fort William the sky was blue and the views across the coastline were crystal clear. We went to Mallaig for lunch then we took the ferry to Skye, the scenery on the crossing was beautiful and dramatic at the same time.

Day Three – More sunshine we drove over the Skye Bridge to the Kyle of Lochalsh, we stopped at Eilean Donan Castle which made a fantastic backdrop to photographs of the cars. We went over the famous ‘Pass of the Cattle’ the highest road in Britain, we had to take it slowly and watch out for passing places, the views were worth it. We had lunch at Applecross – great fish and chips. We then took the single track road along the coast to Shieldaig then Kinlochewe. We spent the night at Bunchrew House Hotel on the Beauly Firth.

Day Four – We went through Inverness and Nairn then headed to Granton on Spey and had lunch in Tomintoul. We went onto Balmoral for a little royal flavour and visited Lochinagar Distillery for a little whiskey flavour, where a few purchases were made. We headed to Braemar over the Spittal of Glenshee with the sun following us all the way to Blairgowrie our overnight stop was in Stanley on the River Tay.

Another Classic in a Classic Location

Day Five – We had a late start to the day and headed to Scone Palace for a visit we were treated like royalty ourselves as we were guided to a private parking area. We had a lovely lunch and a few spots of rain. We then went back to base Kennels Cottage in Dollar, after a fond farewell to the cars that had not once let anyone down our happy travellers headed off to Edinburgh for Dinner at the Scottish Whiskey Society on the Royal Mile – a fitting end to a fabulous tour.

Why not join us for future tours in 2012!

"The cottage is in a beautiful setting and so peaceful. Our room was superb and the breakfasts very tasty - especially the fresh fruit on pancakes with honey! We both felt very pampered. The Morgan was really good fun, and after all day with the top down we were able to do justice to the splendid meals at the nearby Castle Campbell Hotel. All aspects of our stay were first class and we will be back!" Birte and John Bolton - June 2007
